The World Wide Web

Posted by Guildford Web Services on 07/August/2019

This is the second in a five part series called Web Basics.

So, the Internet is just a network of computers, so what is the World Wide Web?

We very lightly touched on TCP/IP last post, one of these is the HTTP layer of the Internet, which stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. The astute of you will realise that is the beginning of a website address.

In its most basic terms, this governs everything that can be viewed in a web browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge etc. This includes all the photos, videos, Facebook Posts, Netflix, YouTube even this blog post.

Originally, the World Wide Web was just text and images, the first ever website can be viewed here . This was created by sir Tim Berners-Lee and Cern, who made the decision to give this probably the greatest invention of the 20th Century away for free, for everyone to use.
